M. war als Dozentin am St. Anne’s College in Oxford tätig. Obwohl sie philosophische Essays geschrieben hat, ist sie eher durch ihre Tätigkeit als Romanschriftstellerin bekannt.
Ihre Philosophie steht in Zusammenhang mit der analytischen Philosophie. Deshalb befaßte sie sich mit den Diskussionen über die Beziehungen zwischen moralischen Urteilen und Realitätsurteilen, und zwischen Beschreibung, Wertung, Urteil, Wahrheit und Gutsein.
